Halloween

It’s nearly Halloween and it occurs to me that this year has flown by so quickly I can barely remember all that has happened. I do remember that it was just a few days after Halloween last year that June gave up her pacifiers and left them in a bag on the front stoop for the pacifier fairy to pick up and give to the babies that still needed them.

It was around this time last year that June was officially potty trained. And that she fell in love with dresses and princesses and jewels. Last year she was a ladybug for Halloween. This year, Snow White. She has a best friend now and loves to dance. She talks. A lot. She’s changed. A lot.

We all have.

And that’s a beautiful thing.

Stubborn

Oh, how we love our child! Oh, how she brings us much joy and happiness. And, oh, what a pain in the rear she can be when she’s going through one of her…um…challenging stages. In the last couple of months the most difficult times are the morning and nighttime teeth brushing routines. I can’t for the life of me figure out why brushing her teeth sets her off, but it’s almost inevitable that those are the times when the time out rug is put to use.

Often I’ll find myself thinking, “This girl is so stubborn!” And then I think about myself. And Fred. And then I’m a bit more forgiving of June.

Can’t Stop

Okay, so, I was going to stop writing in this blog but suddenly I realized I simply didn’t want to. I am not sure what form it will take. I don’t know how often I will post, but I want June to be able to look back on this and see a bit of a tribute to her life, at least her young life, her little girl life.

Today I’ll write about the fact that June is nearly three and is definitely going through all of the challenges of that age. Fred and I just returned from Paris, and since our return June has been particularly crabby. Each time I leave the house now she says, “Mommy, are you going to come back?”

Sometimes, I start to worry about June; or, more specifically, I start to worry about myself as a mother. I start to wonder if I’m helping June to develop resilience, to develop a gentle heart. I worry that I am passing on my tendency to worry on to her and feel guilty about that.

Then I remember that it’s her age, that this is how it should be. That June is just a little girl.

Bubbles

Yesterday, I bought June (and Fred) a huge bottle of bubbles and some bubble wands. While I was exercising downstairs I could see Fred blowing bubbles and June running after them with a look of intense joy in her eyes and a huge smile on her face.

I was explaining to June the difference between a driver and a passenger this morning on the way to school and she said, “I’m the passengo?” Oh how I will miss it when she can clearly articulate her Rs.

Sunday, June was downstairs while Fred and I were upstairs gathering the laundry. She called up, “Fred?! Fred?! Where are you?” I almost peed my pants.

This morning, while eating breakfast, June was repeating the sound, “cole” over and over. “What are you saying?” I asked her. “Your name.”

Crown and Dress

We definitely have a girly girl on our hands (but not a princess, as Fred likes to point out). Every day this week she has been requesting a dress and the crown that she got from her friend’s birthday party last weekend.

Okay, not a princess, but maybe a queen.

Resilient

Unlike her mother and father, June is able to maintain a sense of self-sufficiency and joy even in the midst of illness.

A Story From June’s Teacher, Anne

Today, I brought her upstairs to deliver some papers to the office and when we were going down the stairs, she noticed that two of the lights were out in the lobby ceiling. She said that when she grows up, she will be a ballerina and fly up to replace them, because “that will help the lights and make them HAPPY!” It was so sweet, June is probably the only person I’ve ever known that is worried about making lights happy!
